Heat Pump, Air Conditioning Maintenance Tips
A well maintained heat pump/air conditioning system could save 10% to 25% on your energy costs. When installed and tested by a qualified technician, heat pumps/air conditioners can deliver years of dependable service and comfort. Below are some basic steps you can follow to ensure that your system gives you optimum performance.
- Air filters should be cleaned or replaced every one to three months.
- Make sure the air registers are not closed or blocked by furniture or other objects.
- The area around the outdoor unit must be kept clear of debris and other objects.
- Clear out grass clippings, dry leaves and dirt from the outdoor unit regularly.
Note: If you are not confident in your ability to perform these tasks safely and correctly, don't do it hire a licensed, reputable contractor.
Semi annual or once a year maintenance should be performed by a licensed air conditioning contractor and should include, but not limited to:
- Change or wash filter. (if filter size is known)
- Clean and sanitize evaporator coil.
- Clean drain line and drain pan add drain pan tabs/strips
- Check wires and connections
- Check all motors and compressor amp draws.(tells electrical consumption)
- Inspect inside of air handler for any mold or growth.
- Check heat strip operation and defrost controls. (fall/winter visit)
- Check contactors, capacitors and safety controls.
- Clean condenser coil.
- Check freon charge.
- Check thermostat operation.
- Inform homeowner of any repairs and improvements needed.
Regular maintenance can help keep your heat pump/air conditioning system working properly and help you avoid expensive and untimely repairs.
Apart from the above, the heat pump/air conditioning system can develop other operational problems, to keep from being inconvenienced, start your system before it is really needed ,for heat or cooling, to discover any problems before that first hot or cold day when your licensed contractor is probably swamped with calls from people who have waited too long.
